Gear review: Travelpro luggage

Travel light with this carry-on case

Pilots and flight crews have used Travelpro luggage for decades. Besides the obvious classy airport appeal, the Platinum 7 collection comes with a lifetime warranty. There are ball bearing inline skate wheels, a solid telescoping handle, skid guards and ballistic fabric with DuraGuard coating. Combining the deluxe carry-on rolling tote (easy to stash in overhead bins) with the 20-inch expandable wide-body rollaboard allowed me to stuff all the gear I needed for a one-week bike/business trip. But, as convenient as that was, I think as long as I can squeeze 23 kg into a checked piece of luggage, I’ll opt for a larger rollaboard in the 26- or 28-inch range. But the size of the carry-on was ample—likely why it won the 2010 Leading Edge Award from Executive Travel Magazine for “the best carry-on case.” (Deluxe rolling tote, $270; 20-inch expandable wide body, $350)
