For the health-conscious traveller, a couple of circa-1985 exercise bikes and a room service menu of deep-fried cafeteria classics just don’t cut it anymore. As more folks refuse to put their exercise regimens and healthy eating habits on hold while on the road, hotels are stepping up and offering forward-thinking fitness, wellness and dietary initiatives.

Long meetings can be a drag, but the Elements of Wellness meeting package at Epic Hotel (and the rest of the Kimpton Hotel properties) helps attendees stay bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with aromatherapy, morning yoga, meditation and desk aerobics. Even the conference table settings include natural wood massagers and squeezable stress balls.
Elements of Wellness meetings also ditch the morning donuts for fruit smoothies and whole-grain cereals and keep the juices flowing later by getting everyone moving with a dance session or, in the case of tough guys who don’t dance, a 15-minute power walk.
Wellness-inspired meetings are one of many health-conscious initiatives offered by Kimpton. Hotel guests can take advantage of in-room Pilates, meditation and core-strength training, or just switch on the 24-hour yoga channel and do yoga on their own with complimentary mats and props supplied by the hotel.

Where: San Francisco, CA
California always seems to be ahead of the curve when it comes to health trends. So it’s no surprise Westin made its San Francisco property one of the first to feature a new partnership with sporting goods giant New Balance.
Guests can take advantage of complimentary loans of running shoes with disposable insoles, as well as men’s and women’s workout wear throughout their stay. The hotel also features the chain’s new “SuperFoods” in-room dining menu, built around antioxidant-rich components such as broccoli, olive oil, salmon, avocado and yogurt.

Where: Montreal, QC
It’s not always easy to squeeze in a morning jog in an unfamiliar city. A twice-a-week running club led by staff at this landmark hotel takes away the guesswork of finding a route that’s both scenic and time-sensitive. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, runners meet at 6:40 a.m. for a six-kilometre jog through Old Montreal, the Latin Quarter or along the Lachine Canal, returning by 7:30 a.m., just in time to shower up and face the day.
Fairmont President’s Club members have the added bonus of getting to borrow complimentary Adidas athletic gear during their stay. On the food-service side, Fairmont’s new Lifestyle Cuisine Plus menu caters to guests with specific dietary restrictions due to health or preference (for example, vegans or those on macrobiotic or raw-food diets).

Where: Calgary, AB
Guests staying at this contemporary boutique hotel, owned and operated by the University of Calgary, get the unique experience of staying on campus. That includes full access to the university’s many recreation amenities and fitness hubs including the Olympic Oval skating centre, aquatic and racquet facilities, fitness classes and, if they’re particularly adventurous, the Campus Outdoor Centre’s formidable, four-storey climbing wall.

Where: San Diego, CA
This waterfront hotel offers guests more than just fresh sea air. Last fall, the Bayfront introduced 20 rooms prepared with the PURE allergy-friendly program. Designed to create a better sleeping experience for asthma and allergy sufferers, PURE rooms include sanitized heaters and air conditioners treated with tea tree oil, medical-grade air-purification systems and microfibre linens designed to eliminate dust and dander.
