Montreal's Laurier cuts ties with Gordon Ramsay

Restaurant to be renamed Laurier 1936 post-breakup due to Ramsay's alleged neglect

It just wasn't meant to be. Only six months after the partnership between chef Gordon Ramsay and Laurier BBQ began as an effort to reinvent the restaurant, Laurier is scraping Ramsay's name off its signs, renaming the rotisserie to Laurier 1936. Laurier claims the famously outspoken chef has been absent ever since the opening last August, which included a $1.5-million reno, and set off a 24-hour media frenzy as Ramsay's first Canadian restaurant.

Ramsay signed on as a partner to reinvent the classic barbecue joint last year, adding new options like shrimp and crab roll and porchetta sandwich to a menu of mostly comfort foods, a move that rejuvenated the local institution and brought in a huge following of Montrealers. The partnership evolved into contract consultation work by Ramsay and his team, which ended February 17. According to reports, his lack of contributions and the discrepancy between his vision and that of Danny Lavy, owner of Laurier, is to blame for the dissolution.

Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:

"As of today, welcome to Laurier 1936! Follow us at @Laurier1936. Our new website http://laurier1936.com will be up and running shortly!"

Did this place seriously expect regular visits from Ramsey? Its only been 6 months! Ramsey has several shows, a family, book sales, kitchenware sales, commercials and numerous restaurants.

I'd go to any restaurant in Canada that had Ramsey's name behind it. Next time I'm in Montreal someone may suggest this newly named restaurant, but already I've forgotten the name and if I wish to go will ask "what's that restaurant now called formerly held with Gordon Ramsey"?
