When I visited the Bahamas a couple of years ago, my group stopped at a small cafe in Andros. I and a few others decided to try the fish stew, a traditional Bahamian dish with fish that's cooked in a savoury flour-based gravy.
I'll admit it—the thought of gravy, let alone fish, that early in the morning did turn my stomach slightly. But, thinking of that cliché "When in Rome...," I stuck with my choice and I'm so glad I did.
The fish was beautifully flaky and tender. Spritzed with a healthy squirt of fresh lime and a generous sprinkling of pepper, the thin, soup-like gravy was a complex and tangy. After picking the bones for the last few morsels of fish, I sopped up the leftover gravy with fresh corn bread. Delicious.
The lesson, it seems, was that trying that fish stew (and many other Bahamian specialties during the rest of my trip) enhanced my experience. And that way of thinking has stayed with me since.
Meals can be memorable for many reasons. Perhaps it was the company you shared, or the fact that you dined in a breathtaking and different setting. But in most instances, I think it's the flavours that really sear a dish into your memory.
That's what inspired us to ask our readers about the best thing they've ever eaten while travelling.
Before we put the question out there to our loyal followers, we first had to answer it ourselves.
Rhett didn't hesitate when he was asked about the yummiest thing he's ever eaten in a WestJet destination: fish chowder in Bermuda. "I still dream about it," he admits.
The favourite dish of our intern, Georges, is from his old stomping grounds of Montreal: a smoked-meat sandwich from Schwartz's Deli with a big pickle on the side.
The Bahamian fish stew ranks within my top five of most delicious meals, but fresh lobster with melted butter in Cape Breton Island is all-time favourite. Having grown up there, it's a meal that I have every time I'm back visiting family and it always tastes so darn good.
On Friday, some of our friends on Facebook shared their picks for the yummiest thing they've ever eaten in a WestJet destination—and we've mapped them all on a Google Map of Favourite Foods.
