24 Hours on US$24 on the Big Island

We challenged a panel of tight-fisted (but high-living) islanders to create a day’s worth of fun for (almost free).

Breakfast

Cost: $4

Go where the locals go. Just outside of Hilo, The Isles Café has large and fresh servings for the price of a fancy coffee back home (93 Lihiwai St.; 808-969-3434).

Morning

Cost: Free

Cruise the Hilo Farmers Market for flowers, fresh produce and local crafts. A multicultural food court and a bustling street scene wake up even the groggiest tourist (Mamo Street and Kamehameha Avenue; open every day, but Wednesdays and Saturdays are best; 808-933-1000; hilofarmersmarket.com).

Lunch

Cost: $10.75

Drive to Kona and sate your hunger with some of the best fresh local fish and chips in the state at the open-air Harbor House in Honokohau Harbor (74–425 Kealakehe Pkwy., Kailua-Kona; 808-326-4166).

Afternoon

Cost: Free

Drive through coffee country and try free samples and learn about the industry at award-winning Hula Daddy Kona Coffee (74–4944 Mamalahoa Hwy., Holualoa; 808-327-9744; huladaddy.com).

Dinner

Cost: $4.50

Back in Kona, arrive between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the half-price food at the King Kamehameha Hotel’s Billfish Bar. The kalua pork quesadillas are amazing (75–5660 Palani Rd., Kailua-Kona; 808-329-2911).
