Full disclosure: I checked into Absolument Montreal while on my honeymoon. I have no qualms in admitting I was a googly-eyed fool in love.
But let me assure you—my love for this place would be the same no matter what the circumstances of my trip.
Set on Amherst Street within the eclectic Village neighbourhood of La Belle Ville, Absolument Montreal exudes charm within every nook and cranny of its brick building.
Themed around a cinema motif, the B&B has five rooms that range in size and are christened with various movie-themed monikers: The Oscar, Bollywood, Cincetta, African Queen and Tennessee.
Some of the larger rooms—the Oscar and Cincetta—feature some additions (such as a kitchenette, fireplace or microwave), but each of the suites boast these elements:
• Private, ensuite bathroom
• Luxury bedding and linens
• Bathrobes
• Slippers
• Air conditioning
• Flat-screen LCD television with cable
• DVD-CD player
• Free WiFi
While not in the popular Old Montreal section of the city, or the busy and bustling downtown core, Absolument Montreal’s spot in The Village has a handful of benefits.
For one, you’re close to the action of the area’s portion of Ste-Catherine (which is closed off to cars during the summer months), and just a quick walk to the funky Latin Quarter. Think close, but not too close to the action.
But, even better, Absolument is just a 10-minute walk to Berri-UQAM Metro station—the central station of the entire subway system.
From here, you can head to just about anywhere in the entire city—Old Montreal, The Bell Centre, Mont Royal, the Eaton Centre, to name a few—and beyond.
And if you dig two-wheeled exploration, there’s a Bixi station just a block away from the B&B.
One cautionary note: parking is scarce and pricey in Absolument Montreal’s neighbourhood, so skip the rental car and use your feet, the metro and bikes to get around.
You know how the word “breakfast” is a combination of the words “break” and “fast,” meaning, of course, to end your fasting from the day before?
Absolument Montreal’s daily breakfast doesn’t simply break your fast. This place kicks your fast’s butt until it weeps and begs for mercy.
In short, this breakfast (which is included in the room rate) is legendary. Guests are served four courses privately, either in their room or on their own terrace, at the time of their choosing.
Late risers can rejoice—Absolument will serve you as late as noon.
Beautifully presented, each of the four courses offer fresh, simple fare. Expect fresh pastries, a slew of delicious fruit, cheese and deli meats, and then, a hot dish—such as eggs Benedict, thick French toast, omelettes or crepes—with freshly squeezed juice to wash it all down.
The breakfast normally spans an hour or so, although on busy days, it can last up to an hour and a half. You’re on vacation, after all, so enjoy this feast at the leisurely pace it so deserves.
Absolument Montreal’s star quality goes far beyond the epic breakfasts, which deserve an award, to be sure.
There are so many thoughtful touches to enjoy, from the all-season spa in the idyllic courtyard, to the complimentary DVD and book library, right down to the bucket of umbrellas by the door.
Owners Kent and Stephane, along with Guy and Hector and other members of their staff, are friendly and helpful, but unobtrusive. Privacy is paramount here.
Absolument Montreal not only lets you come and go as you please, but most importantly, makes you feel at home.
Rates at the Absolument Montreal range from $99 to $229, depending on the season and the suite you book.
