Alcatraz Penitentiary

The famous island jail where infamous jailers like Capone did time

Capone spent a lot of his life in small dark places, including some four years at the Alcatraz Penitentiary with the likes of Robert (Birdman) Stroud and George (Machine Gun) Kelly. Built in the mid-1930s, the secluded island known as The Rock housed some of the most notorious criminals at the time. Despite the highest security and the treacherous waters surrounding the island, there were 36 attempted escapes and five prisoners are still unaccounted for. Shut down in 1963 due to high operational costs, the small, murky cells hold only tourists these days.
