Algonquin Golf Course & Academy

100-year-old club combines history, tough holes and dramatic scenery

THE PICTURESQUE TOWN of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, home to the elegant Fairmont Algonquin Hotel and the Algonquin Golf Course and Academy, is well worth the drive from Moncton. Nestled on the shores of Passamaquoddy Bay, Tom McBroom’s redesign of a sparkling seaside layout that's more than 110 years old boasts some of the province's most interesting holes, including the challenging drive of the 423-yard par-4 7th and the demanding 8th, a long flat par-3 with a large, meandering creek that guards and even obscures a large, low green.

But it's during the homeward nine that Algonquin really comes alive. After the one-two par-4 punch of 10 and 11, the bay and the distant coast of Maine serve as the distracting backdrop to the par-3 12th, an awe-inspiring downhill 154 yards that's so close to the United States, there's an International Boundary Marker in the right-hand rough!

On your way to the 18th, take a quick tour around the tiny, ramshackle building next to the 17th green. It's the course's original clubhouse.

TOTAL YARDS: 6,900 yards

NUMBER OF HOLES: 18

LONGEST HOLE: 550 yards

APRES-GOLF: Head to the recently renovated clubhouse or the Fairmont Algonquin's Right to Whale Pub to drown your sorrows with one of New Brunswick's favourite local beers
