When Garth Matthews built a four-level executive home just steps from a semi-private, red sand beach just outside Charlottetown a decade ago, he didn’t expect his pending retirement would involve part-time landlord duties. But after spending nearly $25,000 on renovations and updating the building’s décor, Matthews now finds himself renting the place out to families and golfing buddies alike.
Named for the apple orchard that originally sat on the property, Appledore Beach Resort is now a certified four-star resort that caters to large groups. It sleeps eight, houses a washer and dryer, fireplace and whirlpool tub, and has a fully equipped kitchen with modern appliances for those early-evening lobster boils. The property is rented by the week and equates to less than $50 per person per night when fully occupied, even at the height of the golf season. ($1,999 weekly in July and August; $1,799 in June and September; $1,599 in May in October.)
Appledore is also only a five-minute drive from Fox Meadow Golf and Country Club, where the world-class Canadian Golf Academy has recently set up shop, offering lessons for golfers of all levels.
