Assiniboine Park Zoo

2008 Value Awards Winner: Canada’s oldest zoo has big plans in the works

DEBBY, ASSINIBOINE'S RECORD-HOLDING polar bear, passed away on November 17, 2008 at the impressive age of 42. But her legacy will live on with the zoo's upcoming world-class International Polar Bear Conservation Centre. Still in the planning stages, the rescue, rehabilitation and education facility will set the world standard for all things polar bear.

And that's just one facet of the Assiniboine Park Zoo's $180-million transformation. Also on deck is a new conservatory, family centre, pathways, trolley, youth park and a new primate area. A duck pond and nature playground will be the first features of the eight-year project to be constructed, beginning as early as fall 2009.

Throughout the massive transformation, get up close and personal with more than 300 species on the park's 398 acres. (Adults, $4.78).
