
In addition to the celebrated Highlands Links, Cape Breton is also home to Bell Bay Golf Club, a Tom McBroom layout that’s a short drive from Sydney.
Adults $65 May 15 – June 30 and Sept. 13 – Oct. 31; Juniors, $55 year-round. Power carts, $32. Replay rate starts at $25. Club rentals, $20 ($40 for premium brands like Ping, Callaway and Cobra).
From opening to June 15, two can stay at the Inverary Resort located on the golf course grounds and play for $131 per person. Bell Bay also offers fully furnished cottages right on the course that sleep six and start at $1,800 per week ($2,800 after June 15), or $425 a night, including a round of golf and access to the resort. Few Canadian courses are as beginner-friendly. The two-day spring learning school fills up fast; head pro Ted Stonehouse wasn’t named 2007’s “Junior Leader of the Year” by the Canadian Professional Golf Association for nothing. Junior club rentals start at $10.
For a break, explore Cape Breton Island. Take a sailing tour on the Bras d’Or Lakes, or a scenic tour of the Cabot Trail. Visit the puffins and seals at the Bird Islands, the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, or the Highland Village Museum. (902-563-4636)
