Castle Dome Mine Museum

A stunning tribute to a mining town that once trumped Yuma

This recreation of a late-1800s silver mining town called Castle Dome is more of an actual museum than you’ll find in a typical ghost town.

Allen Armstrong, a historian, and his wife, Stephanie, an archeologist, decided to collect remnants from the original settlement—rusty tools, weathered boards and clothing—and use them to recreate a place that, by 1878, was bigger than nearby Yuma.

That was 11 years ago. The result of the owners’ painstakingly thorough rebuilding process and attention to detail is a fascinating glimpse into the past. Each of the 23-plus buildings is a museum in itself, from the saloon, mercantile, church and hotel, among other spots.

You won’t just stumble upon this gem by accident, but if you take the time to make your way to this stunning labour of love, you’ll be glad you did.
