The Club at Tower Ranch

Your golfing dollar is a hotly contested prize, destined only for the establishments most willing to earn the respect it deserves. Kelowna’s The Club at Tower Ranch fits the bill perfectly

The Golf Resort explosion in the B.C. Interior may have been derailed by the recession, but it leaves a legacy of exceptional five-star layouts… and, for the moment at least, some pretty steep green fees. But value still persists at a place like Tower Ranch, where you get more than you pay for. Bearing the hallmarks of architect Tom McBroom, the Ranch starts out with a linksy, roller-coaster dip into the Okanagan Valley, with wide fairways bordered by fescue and sprawling, rough-edged bunkers. It’s a starkly different story on the jaw-dropping back nine, which churns with hillocks, undulations and dramatic elevation changes as it climbs, to say nothing of its stunning valley vistas.

Why Go Now

It’s a safe bet that golf in the Okanagan is going to get cheaper in the next two seasons as facilities compete for reduced tourist numbers. Despite a three-digit green fee, Tower Ranch offers the most quality experience for the money in the region, and includes the price of a cart (it’s a tough walk). In many other cases in the Interior, you’ll pay more and get less.

Green Fees

High Season (Apr. 27 – Sept. 27): $125 regular, $85 local.

Best Deals

When it comes to saving a few bucks on the annual getaway, golfers will sleep standing up if it means being able to play a better course. Happily, Accent Inns offers one of B.C.’s best options for cut-rate shuteye. No word yet on 2009’s golf package rates, but one of last year’s best peak-season bargains included one night’s accommodation and green fees and shared cart at two of the area’s best layouts—Predator Ridge and Gallagher’s Canyon—for $175 per person (double occupancy).

Broke Local Secrets

Kelowna native Kelley Taylor recommends Paul’s Tomb. Relax, it’s a user-friendly hiking trail that runs the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake in “off-the-beaten-path” Knox Mountain Park. Take in the terrific valley views and the history behind the burial site of Rembler Paul, the local speculator and mine financier for whom the trail is named, then enjoy the picnic area and beach at the end. Cost? Zip.
