A Foodie's Guide to 24 Hours on $24 in Toronto

We challenged a panel of three tight-fisted (but high-living) Torontonians to create a day’s worth of fun for (almost free). In this first installment, epicurean Dick Snyder shares his picks.

Dick Snyder is the founder and editor of CityBites, Toronto’s free bi-monthly food magazine.

Breakfast - $3.50

Grab the city’s best espresso and a pastry at Sam James Coffee Bar.

Morning - FREE

Wander south to funky and walkable Kensington Market to peruse international food stalls and shops. Watch for free samples!

Lunch - $8

Explore the financial district and hit the popular Sandwich Box, where Bay Streeters and other masters of industry line up out the door for fresh-made fare.

Afternoon - FREE

Peruse stalls on two floors at St. Lawrence Market, sampling at Ukrainian Store Dnister, Scheffler’s Deli, Kozlik’s Canadian Mustard and many more. Visit the free Market Gallery for a taste of local art.

Dinner - $9

Wander Queen Street West, exploring boutiques and ethnic food emporia. Enjoy the lightly battered fish and chips at Chippy’s while perched on the street-side bench.

Evening - $2

Stroll Trinity Bellwoods Park (across from Chippy’s), where dog walkers, circus performers and urban hippies gather. Grab a soft-serve from the ice-cream truck and, if you’re there on Tuesday, catch the farmers market.
