Most Mexican taquerias are like tacos themselves: uniformly unexciting at a glance, but either fantastic or crappy depending on what you taste on the inside.
But I think Fru-Tacos is the best value taqueria in Zihuatanejo for two reasons.
For one, it's far from the tourist traps (though only a block from the Commercial Mexicana grocery store). Because of this, the prices are more than fair, and you likely won't be surrounded by other gringos.
Secondly, they offer a wider and far yummier variety of fillings—not to mention a more generous helping—than you'll get in any other taco that costs less than a buck.
Fillings GaloreThe set-up is simple: there are a bunch of different fillings whipped up each day, and you choose which filling you want, taco-by-taco.
There are a slew of staple fillings to try:
• Chorizo and beans
• Chorizo and potatoes
• Chicken mole
• Sweet and hot pork or chicken
• Oaxacan cheese, a ricotta-like cheese, with green peppers—my favourite
Sometimes you'll also find steak and vegetables, vegetables in a cream sauce, rice and hard-boiled egg, or other options.
Tacos are seven pesos each, and delicious enough to make you overeat on multiple occasions. At that price, you can afford to try a bunch and find your own favourite filling.
But if you're feeling really ambitious, order a huge quesadillas. It can be made with any of the fillings above, or pretty much any combination you want.
The owner speaks excellent English if your hand signals and broken Spanish can't help explain what you're after.
Thankfully for your thirst, drink options are as plentiful as the taco fillings. There are licuados (smoothies made with fruit, milk and ice) with papaya, melon, plantains, plus fresh juices (orange, grapefruit, carrot, beet, celery, or a mix).
Fru-Tacos is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m daily.
