After years of success in shipbuilding and shipping (along with some alleged rum running), Charles Longworth built Hillhurst Inn in 1897 in what is now the heart of Charlottetown. Since then, the building has housed a prominent city mayor and three successive presidents of University of Prince Edward Island. Hillhurst’s current owners purchased the property in 1995 and resorted the nine luxurious suites back to prominence, decorating with period furnishings and Island art.
Walking into the warmth of the grand foyer, the lavish woodwork, oak paneling and Victorian construction are extravagant even by today’s standards. Theatres and shopping are just two blocks from the property, two houses down is the Fairholm National Historic Site, and just four blocks away is the Confederation Hiking Trail.
Rooms have televisions, telephones, data ports, air conditioning and private baths—some with Jacuzzi tubs.
Prices range from $135 to $235 from June 10 to Sept. 21, and from $99 to $165 in the off-season.
