Hostile Hostel

Where the ghost of Patrick Whelan still roams

The ghost of Patrick Whelan is believed to haunt the HI Ottawa Jail Hostel. Whelan was convicted of the assassination of D’arcy McGee, one of the Fathers of Confederation and a candidate to succeed John A. McDonald as prime minister. McGee was shot in the back of the head on Sparks Street on April 7, 1868, and, despite no witnesses, Whelan was arrested and charged with murder because he was found with a pistol with one shot fired, as well as suspicion of Irish radicalism. Although much of the evidence against Whelan was fabricated, he was hung on February 11, 1869, in the yards of the old jail. It was Canada’s last public hearing.
