Hotel 1000
High tech meets homey at this web-based, well-situated Seattle hotel
Like a chocolate fountain or that new car smell, the bathtub at the Hotel 1000 is so pleasing to the senses that you don’t want to ruin it by getting involved. A hole in the ceiling projects a laser-like beam of water that fills the deep, soaking tub stealthily. Splashing, after all, is not very streamlined and modern—two attributes this hotel exudes in every square foot, from the multitasking 40-inch LCD TV that is also the room’s surround-sound theatre, satellite radio, computer monitor and (given it’s picture-frame slenderness) wall art, to a touch-screen Internet phone that eliminates the need to bother the front desk almost entirely.
But the real innovation is easily missed by the sleepy guest: that the entire property runs as a Web-based system that crunches data supplied by sensors all over the hotel, whether it’s the mini-bar screaming for a top-up, or the infrared sensors warning housekeeping that the room is still occupied… perhaps by guests in the corner rooms catching one last epic glimpse of Mount Ranier or Elliot Bay.
For all its high-tech bounty, the 120-room Hotel 1000 is very welcoming—even quaint—wrapping guests in elemental décor like dark wood, marble and an earthy colour palate. That it occupies the lower 14 floors of a high-end residential tower might have something to do with the sense of home.
If it’s too rainy to stroll to the nearby Pike Place Market or grab a bite in the diverse Belltown neighbourhood, guests will not be disappointed with the property’s full-service spa, fourth-floor library and reading room, complete with plush reading chairs and fireplace. The rooftop dog run and virtual golf (the same set-up as in Michael Jordan’s house, according to staff) makes it even possible to burn a few calories without stepping outside.
Prices start at $225 in the off-season, and $300 otherwise.
