Hundred Bar & Kitchen

Avenue Edmonton magazine editor Colin McGarrigle loves Hundred Bar & Kitchen, an energetic lounge in Edmonton, Alberta

He's a fresh face on Edmonton’s media scene, but already a familiar one. Since relocating from Calgary last July to become editor of Avenue Edmonton, Colin McGarrigle has focused on seeing—and being seen—in his new hometown.

As the gregarious Irish-born charmer puts it: “I’m the public face of Avenue Edmonton, so I’m out there, getting people talking about the magazine.”

He’s gone to events like the President’s Chamber Ball (where he chatted with Kevin Costner), met with regional mayors, judged competitions (including a Grey Cup bartending contest) and has quickly become a regular guest on local TV and radio.

Not surprisingly, this man-about-town likes to hang at Hundred, a contemporary spot with a whiff of fin-de-siècle decadence—think old-boy’s-club cigar room-meets-classy bordello.

“Transform Avenue Edmonton into a real-life place and it would look something like Hundred,” says McGarrigle. “Lots of dialogue about what’s going on in the city, in a trendy-but-classy setting. I love its energetic, upbeat vibe.”

DOOR

“It’s a great place to meet up with friends, or bring clients for drinks or lunch. People often come just for an after-work drink, then end up staying for some food and, before you know it, you’re here for the evening."

DRINK

“[It has] an extensive drink menu, 70-plus wines and eight different Caesars.” But McGarrigle goes for ‘The Muddle.’ “It’s the evolution of the margarita. A refreshing summer drink with spicy flavours and lots of smushed-up strawberries and raspberries.”

DISH

“[The menu] has an international flair, with fantastic presentation. The food’s all about socializing—it’s made for sharing.” McGarrigle recommends the porcupine chicken satay: “A light, crispy dish with tasty dips.”

DÉCOR

“It sets a dark, sexy tone. Lots of maroon, black and leather, with high-backed booths, high ceilings and crystal chandeliers. [It’s] a seductive feel that emphasizes socializing.”

DRESS

“You’ll want to look good, trendy and up-to-date, but not an over-the-top nightclub look. The after-work crowd is mostly business attire, dressier in the evenings.”

Hundred Bar & Kitchen is open Mon. – Wed. 11 a.m. to midnight; Thu. – Fri. 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Sat. 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.; Sun. 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
