Alpine Skiing competitor Kelly VanderBeek reveals her favourite spots in Whistler

About Kelly VanderBeek

Age: 26

Sport: Alpine Skiing

Home Turf: Chilliwack, B.C.

When not carrying the dreams of a nation, what do you do?

“I am slowly plugging away at a business degree with Athabasca University. Ski racing is one of, if not the most, demanding sports when it comes to travel. I even had to finish my high school education through correspondence, due to absenteeism.”

If you weren't an Olympian, what would you be?

“I enjoy drawing and the art of photography—a field I’d love to work in.”

How long have you been skiing?

“Since I was two-and-a-half years old, and racing since I was eight.”

Who's your Olympic hero?

“I was nine when I watched Karrin Lee-Gartner win her Olympic gold medal at the [1992] Albertville Olympics. I was so blown away by seeing her win, that night I decided I was going to be an Olympic ski racer.”

Behind-the-scenes Photoshoot

Watch behind-the-scenes as up! Art Director, Robert Biron directs December's feature photoshoot with three 2010 Olympians: Justin Lamoureux, Kelly VanderBeek and Maelle Ricker.

Kelly Vanderbeek's Picks

Best Splurge

“For me, any splurge involves pampering my body. The Four Seasons Whistler Spa might hurt your budget, but it definitely won’t disappoint.”

Best Deal

Southside Diner in Whistler. You can get a burger and a beer for $10 on Monday nights.”

Best Drinks

Dusty’s Bar & BBQ, especially after a World Cup race (or when the Olympics come February). It’s right at the base of Creekside, where all the Olympic racing action is happening. Great beer and nachos.”

Best Ski Run

“Anywhere Rob Boyd goes! Rob is a Whistler local, World Cup Downhill winner and a bit of a legend. Powder days can vary depending on the snow, wind and amount of tourists, and Rob always knows where to go to find fresh tracks. Be warned… experts only when following Boyd.”
