In the midst of urban Fredericton lies the man-made beauty of Kingswood Golf Course, fun for golfers of all levels, but a robust challenge for the most skilled. Designed by Canadian architects Graham Cooke and Darrell Huxham, Kingswood is a down-to-earth, almost municipal sort of place where the sprawling practice facility and first tee rub elbows with a family entertainment centre complete with fitness centre and bowling centre. Measuring more than 7,000 yards from the tips, there are seven water hazards in play through the first six holes alone, most of them tag-teaming with sprawling embankments of bunkers to snag wayward approaches. Kingswood's most dramatic moments come on the homeward nine, notably the rock face and 30-foot waterfall bordering the left side of the 14th fairway.
Put simply, Kingswood has it all, and all under one roof, so to speak. Rare indeed is the four-star golf course that comes complete with a full-service, family-friendly facility, one that's a screaming deal to boot.
$65 peak season, $50 shoulder season (opening to June 4 and Oct. 1 - 17); Twilight rate $50; shared cart $17.50 a seat.
At press time, Kingswood was looking to renew last year's deal with the nearby Delta Fredericton, where two people could stay for one night and play Kingswood and another well-priced local gem, Mactaquac Golf Course, for just $135 a person. “Basically, your golf is free,” says golf manager Kevin Johnston.
Kingswood boasts one of the finest golf practice facilities in all of Atlantic Canada. The nine-hole track is just $24 and $17 for juniors ($6 and $9 replays, respectively). And for the kids, Johnston recommends Science East, a top-notch education centre that combines learning and fun for just $22 for a family of four.
