One of the best values in London is the Labatt Hometown Brewery Tour. For $10 per person, you get to see the belly of the beast and then feed from it.
Visitors are spared the Gilles Duceppe “hairnet in factory” look, however you must wear closed-toe, flat footwear, eye protectors and a headset to hear the tour guide over the delightful racket of modern-day bulk brewing. The one-hour walking part of the tour takes you throughout the site while a guide gives a comprehensive, easy-to-follow breakdown of how beer gets from the malt stable to your table.
You can feel like you’re on the set of Laverne &
Shirley when you observe the bottling area, but you must resist doing the glove-on-a-bottle trick (the beer goes through 160 different quality checks before it leaves the brewery). The final and best part of the tour is the beer-tasting session at the end, which you’ll leave with an informative place mat, a free T-shirt and a healthy buzz from the five brew styles you just tried.
Tours must be booked in advance, and only run during the week.
