Mayan Ruins: Coba

A look at Coba, the large ruined city of the Mayan civilization

In the Classic period, all roads led to this water-rich network, with a ball court, the pyramid La Iglesia (the Church) and the tallest step pyramid in all of the Yucatan, Nohoch Mul, a rapidly eroding temple you can still climb (but probably shouldn't).

Although mostly engulfed by the jungle, Coba makes a fine day trip packaged with hikes, a zipline, cenote-dipping and a visit to a Maya village. Daily trips from Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
