Mayan Ruins: Muyil

A look at Muyil, a site of the ancient Mayan Civilization that was a vital trading centre during the Classic period

The largest Maya site in the vast Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is in a marshland fed by two freshwater lagoons.

Networked with Coba, it was a vital trading centre in the Classic period. Jungle and sea routes—accessible by a man-made canal system—funnelled items like jade, obsidian, salt and cocoa beans.

Today, 38 hectares are open seven days a week. Located 25 kms south of Tulum.
