The New Dali Museum

The new Dali Museum recently opened its doors to display both Salvador Dali's impressive works of art and some very unusual architectural elements.

The Dali Museum has been wowing visitors with its unusual exterior and creative spatial design, not to mention the collection of Salvador Dali's work, since it reopened in January 2011. With more than 135 000 visitors in the past four months, it's no wonder that this newly renovated musem has been called a "must-see" for both art and architectural aficionados.

Double the size of the previous exhibition space, this 15 000 square foot museum not only features the largest collection of Dali's work outside of Spain, it also offers visitors a variety of new amenities to the public. Guests can dine in the ultra-modern Cafe Gala, peruse the Dali-inspired merchandise in the museum store or wander the Avant Garden which overlooks Tampa Bay.

The striking  "Glass Enigma", 900 pieces of triangular-shaped glass panels that curve around the museum, is the only glass structure of its kind in North America. Inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome—which is found at Dali’s Teatro Museo in Figueres, Spain—this impressive sculpture provides a truly unique view of the waterfront as no two glass panels are alike.

The Dali Museum asked iPhone app company Hipstamatic to create a camera app for the museum. Debuting the Dali Museum GoodPak this past fall, iPhone users can now create Dali-like photographs using the artist's colour palettes and random photo distortion. The museum even created a global photo contest around this app, the winning photos can be seen here.
