Boasting some of the best sunsets in the world Rocky Harbour is definitely not a bad place to spend the night. And you can’t do better in the area with the ideally suited Ocean View Hotel. No, it’s not just a name!
Across the street from the sea, half the rooms have a direct line to “sunset alley” where the sun slips down behind the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse in the distance. New owners took over three years ago and the renovations haven’t stopped since. All of the 52 rooms have been redone and the lobby is getting a facelift this fall.
Newfoundland’s rich culture is evident by the locally made folk art on the walls and the live folk music in the pub. Nearby Port aux Choix artist Ben Plowman takes things like wood from lobster traps and transforms it into eye-catching wall hangings and pictures. He even holds “meet the artist” nights every Thursday, where you can learn just how a lobster trap can be turned into a $4500 piece of art.
If you’re more musically inclined and happen to be in the area on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday summer night, you must book a $15 ticket at the pub on site for The Anchors Aweigh Band. Just try not to enjoy yourself with this group of local men who put on the area’s hugely popular traditional music show.
Rooms from $125 to $165 in the high season of June to September and from $99 to $129 during April, May and October. The hotel is closed in the winter.
