Golfing In Kamloops

See endless greens that reach over the valley

In six years, Tobiano—a remarkable golf oasis on the edge of Kamloops Lake in the heart of B.C.’s Thompson Okanagan region—has become one of the most talked-about golf destinations in Canada. One look around will tell you why. Considered by many to be architect Tom McBroom’s crowning layout, Tobiano measures an impressive 7,328 yards from the back tees, where players are bombarded from the outset by gorgeous views of some of Canada’s most striking and unique geography. McBroom’s so-called “infinity greens,” which appear to the player to extend to the edge of the valley, make club selection tricky and back pins almost impossible to reach. The clay dunes, arroyos and bluffs looming over the lake make for some spectacular vistas. Tobiano has the teeth to test even the most accomplished of players. Green fees run $130 during peak season for times booked 14 days or more in advance, and include GPS-equipped carts, practice range access and bottled water. Rentals are available for $55, and there’s a weekday replay rate of just $59, Monday through Thursday.

When the round is over, check out the restored Spirit of Kamloops steam train on the Kamloops Heritage Railway (July and August), go casting about for rainbow trout in McConnell Lake, check out the events at Riverside Park or venture through Deadman Valley to Vidette Lake to visit what local lore says is the Centre of the Universe, as identified a quarter-century ago by Tibetan monks.

Tobiano is in the Thompson region not the Okanagan Valley ... it is much closer to Kamloops than any city in the Okanagan if you plan to fly or drive.
