Q&A: Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay is known for a myriad of things—his temper, reality shows, world-renowned restaurants and his 12 Michelin stars.

Now he can add his first Canadian restaurant to that list. Last August, Gordon Ramsay opened Laurier in Montreal, reinventing a classic barbecue joint that had been around since the 1930s. “I loved the fact that it was a true Montreal institution,” says Ramsay. “I also think rotisserie chicken is one of the most delicious dishes when done well.”

What do you think of Montreal as a foodie destination?

There are so many restaurants serving up every type of cuisine you can think of, and the markets are fantastic.

Did you try Montreal poutine?

Poutine is a guilty pleasure—I used to love chips and gravy when I was a kid, so it really takes me back.

What’s the worst thing you have ever eaten?

Deep-fried tarantula was pretty disgusting.

What do you make that are your kids’ favourite dishes?

They’ve each got their own favourites. Jack loves spicy chicken wings, whereas Tilly is more of a cupcake girl. When we do fajitas, they love to have guacamole competitions.

Where do you go for a guaranteed good meal?

Chez Bruce in Wandsworth in London.

Are you a wine or beer drinker?

I’m probably more of a wine drinker, especially if it’s with a meal, but sometimes a pint of beer really hits the spot.

What five staple ingredients are always in your kitchen?

Dried pasta, tinned tomatoes, good-quality olive oil, frozen chicken stock and eggs.

If you had to pick one swear word to stick to...

Hmm, I’m not sure I should say!

Update: As of February 17, 2012, Laurier Gordon Ramsay has been renamed Laurier 1936 and is not longer affiliated chef Gordon Ramsay.
