Situated as it is directly outside the front door of Edmonton International Airport, RedTail Landing Golf Club is the perfect place to burn off a few hours during an unscheduled stopover. But with its wide open, links-style layout and fescue-trimmed, what-you-see-is-what-you-get design, RedTail Landing is fast becoming a destination in its own right.
Measuring a brawny 7,322 yards from the back tees, RedTail Landing—owned, operated and designed by local designers Puddicombe Golf—has played host to both World Masters Games, Canadian Women’s Tour and Alberta Open since it opened in 2003.
The facility also boasts a 19-acre practice facility with grass tees, bunkers, practice greens and chipping areas considered the finest in the Edmonton area. There’s also a unique feature that more Canadian courses ought to emulate: an 18-hole putting course, complete with water hazards and bunkers, accessible for just $8 ($5 for juniors and seniors).
TOTAL YARDS: 7,322 yards
NUMBER OF HOLES: 18
WHAT’S NEW: New for 2009 is a new fleet of brand new Yamaha golf carts equipped with all the bells and whistles including the very high tech Inforemer GPS system, which tells exact yardages of your tee shot and distances to the hole.
APRÉS GOLF: Whenever you’re in Edmonton, there’s always something happening, says RedTail head pro Chad Rumpel—notably weekly festivals in the summer. After all, they don’t call it the Festival City for nothing. You can also go for a stroll down the kitschy, boardwalk-style Whyte Avenue of Old Strathcona, where you can enjoy beef carpaccio or prosciutto and pineapple pizza at Packrat Louie.
