Sam Roberts' favourite spots in Canada
Where this musician eats and plays
Favourite Montreal eats
A Portuguese rotisserie chicken place called Chez Doval. It’s a real taste of Little Portugal, which is a vital part of the Plateau. [The Plateau] is the cultural hub of the city.
Favourite places to play
The West Coast is always a really great place to play music. Two radio stations in Ottawa just started playing “Brother Down” 10 years ago and essentially launched our career. Montreal is our hometown, and it’s just pretty different from everywhere else. Those are three of the more energetic places to play.
Favourite place to visit
I love Newfoundland, which is a place I had never visited before touring. It’s just a wonderful place with people who love music and who know how to live life to the fullest. You get swept away when you go there.
Favourite new pastime
I didn’t know what candlepin bowling was until we did it in Moncton, [N.B.]. Man, what a scene! It’s hard to go back [to regular 10-pin] once you’ve tasted the true challenge of candlepin bowling.
