Sandbanks Provincial Park

The world’s largest freshwater baymouth sand dunes

On a sunny, hot mid-summer’s day, glaciers are far from the baking mind.

But at Sandbanks, long lauded as one of the finest beaches in the province, the connection between ice and sand is more tactile than you might think.

The glacial scouring and retreat more than 10,000 years ago, combined with today’s prevailing southwesterly winds, have created the largest freshwater baymouth sand dunes in the world.

Less than three hours from Ottawa or Toronto, this Arabian-like landscape kneels in the shadows of dunes as high as 25 metres. The majesty is preserved within a provincial park that boasts three sandy beaches, so unlike weary desert travellers, you’ll be able to cool your sun-baked skin in Lake Ontario.

The same breezes that have drifted the sand into snaking hills also make Sandbanks a favourite destination for windsurfers and sailors. With over 500 onsite campsites and nestled in quiet and picturesque Prince Edward County (also well known for its pleasant bike touring), Sandbanks is quickly being discovered by Ontarians seeking cottage country alternatives.
