THE ABORIGINAL KWAKWAKA'WAKW people tell tales of large, ape-like creatures inhabiting the deep, dark forests of Vancouver Island. They call it dzunukwa or bukwuss – the wild woman or wild man of the woods. The term sasquatch is derived from the Coast Salish sasq’ets, the half-man/half-beast that stalks the Harrison River valley- uncannily human in anatomical design, though much taller and covered in matted brown hair. Reports from hunters, First Nations and other folks who tramp around the forest keep trickling in – all of them describing a similarly strapping, hirsute figure crossing a logging road with its characteristic long loping gait.
