Sauble Beach

Stretch of milky sand that offers both liveliness and tranquility

Follow the flight path of a Frisbee tossed expertly at Sauble Beach. It streaks above the golden shallows of Lake Huron, where the waves break and roll far from the shore; rises to wheel briefly with seagulls under a sharp blue sky, nearly colliding with an errant volleyball, almost twanging a kite string; passes as a shadow over the faces of napping parents, coasts behind the hunched back of a child deepening the moat of her sandcastle, and eventually lands softly in the hands of the indeed receiver.

Such is the mid-summer scene at Sauble Beach, an 11-kilometre stretch of wide, milky sand that offers both liveliness and tranquility, depending on whether you choose the energetic southern portion close to the town centre, or the wide open northern end with camera-worthy falls at the mouth of the Sauble River.

Use the beach as a playground, or take the hand of a lover and stroll away from the crowd. Either way, the great cooling machine of Lake Huron beckons, its alternating bands of green and aquamarine tempting even the most relaxed sunbather to run in for a dip.
