Seaport Village

A great family hangout on the beautiful waterfront

At the very least, Seaport Village is a creative use of land. This 14 acre-waterfront village was built in 1980, overtop a landfill on a tract of land called Punta de los Muertos, or Point of the Dead. (Spanish explorers who fell victim to scurvy were buried here in the 18th century.)

Today, strolling along the winding footpaths that pass small, lulling fountains trickling into ponds and the dancing shadow of blooming coral trees and palms swinging in the wind, you’d never guess. This man-made waterfront village now boasts more than 54 shops and 13 casual places to grab a bite to eat, plus four bay-view dining options. The village also hosts special events, like a small Spring Busker’s Festival in April, free Sunday concerts at the Gazebo and live entertainment on random days throughout the year.

The Village’s easy central downtown location, ice cream vendors, kite shop and vintage Carousel (circa 1895) with horses, bears and a menagerie of other creatures will delight children and their relaxed parents.

Be warned: young single travellers, or those looking for a more local vibe, may prefer to skip this boardwalk and the hordes shopping for typical souvenirs like t-shirts and shot glasses in favour of the younger crowds on Ocean Beach, Mission Beach or Pacific Beach in the North part of town.

Seaport Village is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in June, July and August, and until 9 p.m. otherwise.
