Stanhope Bay & Beach Resort

Enjoy upscale seclusion at the refurbished Stanhope Bay & Beach Resort

Located on a peninsula in Covehead Bay, just 20 minutes north of Charlottetown, Stanhope Bay & Beach Resort recently underwent a massive renovation that harkens back to the Roaring Twenties.

The main lodge, which houses traditional and deluxe guest rooms (there are also cliffside suites available, overlooking the water), has been built and restored around a log cabin built on the property in 1789. But save for that, virtually everything else has been redone: the old dining room is now the lobby, the peaked roof that inhibited views of the bay has been removed and some rooms were doubled up to create larger suites. All rooms (from $124) include cable TV, air conditioning and European duvets, and guests can enjoy a heated outdoor pool, continental breakfast and home-baked cookies every afternoon.

“We took this painting we found of the resort from back in the early ’50s and gave it to the contractor and told him, ‘This is your blueprint,’” says Michael Murphy, one of the principals behind the multi-million-dollar renovation. “We wanted to get it back to that grand, old resort feel, but still provide our guests with amenities from today, like plasma televisions and wireless Internet.”
