Sushi Nami Royale

The East Coast of Canada is well known for its sensational seafood, but that doesn't mean it has to be cooked. Halifax is home to many Japanese sushi restaurants and Sushi Nami Royale is one of my absolute favourites.

Modern Look, Traditional and Fusion Dishes

Located in downtown Halifax, just off Spring Garden Road, the restaurant's atmosphere will make you feel like you're fine dining, but without the expensive price tag. When you first walk into the restaurant, the sushi chefs are set up at a long bar, hard at work. The white walls and tables give a decidedly modern feeling, as does the menu.

Sushi Nami not only serves up traditional sushi, sashimi and maki, but also specializes in fusion dishes. The unique menu is a creation of owner Dae John and head chef John Sam.

Welcoming to Sushi Newcomers

I have to admit, I'm somewhat of a newcomer to the sushi phenomenon. If you're like me, this is the place for you: along with sushi and sashimi for the true sushi fanatics, the menu also offers sushi pizza, vegetarian maki, udon noodles, and nami style rice bowls.

Recommended Plates

On a recent visit, I tried to branch out a bit: we started with an appetizer of tako taraage a.k.a dusted baby octopus, seasoned and fried ($6.95). Although it took me a minute to get over the fact they were served with their heads still attached—eek!—they were surprisingly delicious.

Followed by a favourite of mine, unagi maki (cooked eel) and tekka maki (tuna rolls). Both orders came with six pieces and only cost $6.50.

The Fusion Menu

The best part? The fusion menu. Options include the Caterpillar Roll (avocado, salmon, crab, cream cheese, and fish roe, wrapped in cucumber) and the Rock'n'Roll (Rock lobster with avocado, cucumber, ginger, green onions, and crispy garlic).

All fusions dishes include 8 pieces and range in price from $8.95 to $12.95. My dining partner tried to Fuji Mountain Roll (salmon, crab, avocado, mango, and cucumber) and couldn't stop raving about the crunchy tempura texture and spicy taste.

Great Presentation & Service

The presentation of the dishes makes them almost too pretty to eat—almost. After I mangled the meal with my attempt at using chopsticks, it wasn't quite so presentable, but it was definitely delicious.

The ambience is excellent, and the tables can seat large parties or romantic dinners for two. There's also an extensive drink list, including red and white wine, martinis, and traditional sake.

The servers are quick and friendly, and really known their sushi. Ask about the Tsu-Nami daily special, when all items on the Tsu-Nami menu are 20% off.

The Verdict

Whether you're a hardcore sashimi lover or more of a California Roll type, Sushi Nami is the place to go for your sushi fix.
