Resting at an elevation of 2,300 feet, Tubac Golf Resort has significantly cooler temperatures throughout the year in comparison to nearby Tucson (77 kilometres) and Phoenix (256 kilometres), averaging about 10 degrees less in the summer. Thankfully, the vibe at this relaxed, sprawling resort is just as cool.
Set amongst the Tumacacori and Santa Rita Mountain ranges, the lush grounds are a refreshing switch from Arizona’s dry desert. Originally established in 1789 as the Otero Ranch, the property became the resort it is today in 2002. A recent whopping $40 million expansion and renovation brought a staggering amount of improvements, from a world-class 27-hole golf course to upgraded accommodations and a massive spa.
Every square inch of the spacious hacienda (Spanish for estate) guest suites oozes charm. The beautifully tiled bathrooms are staggeringly large, and come complete with a Jacuzzi tub. Other features include a quaint fireplace, patio and separate seating area with modern leather furniture.
Though the temptation to lounge the day away in such beautiful accommodations is strong, there is far too much offered on this 600-acre property to spend your days inside. Onsite, there’s the Red Lawrence-designed golf course, 4,000-square foot spa offering a multitude of treatments, tennis courts, fitness centre and delicious dining options. Less than a mile from the resort’s gates is Tubac Village, with more than 100 shops and art galleries.
Room rates range from $95 to $349, based on double occupancy.
