Waianuhea

Lush natural beauty and luxurious digs makes for the ultimate level of tranquility

IF A HAWAIIAN vacation is an escape from the mainland’s perpetual hum, then this gorgeous upland property on the Big Island promises to transport you to another dimension of exquisite tranquility.

High above the Hamakua coast on the slopes of Mauna Kea (some 2,500 feet above sea level), Waianuhea is located midway between Kona and Hilo, so finding your way to the door is a bit of an adventure. But from the moment you arrive, your body will begin to melt into a state of intense relaxation, until you’re ready to simply explore and absorb the beauty that surrounds you.

The creative forces of both Mother Nature and mankind are exhibited in every nook and cranny here. Wander the seven acres of property and you’ll inevitably hear bullfrogs braying on the lily-padded pond; you’ll linger beside the lush garden growing coffee, herbs, citrus and edible flowers; you’ll guffaw at the views and tropical vegetation that mark the boundaries of your seclusion; you’ll marvel at the fact that this place exists completely off the grid, employing tools like solar panels and a water catchment system.

Inside the luxurious two-story home are five guest rooms, ranging from a fairly simple bedroom (US$195) with a private entrance, to an apartment-sized suite (US$400) with a two-person hot tub on the large, enclosed patio, built using bamboo shoots and volcanic rocks. All guest rooms feature tasteful décor, huge comfy beds, private bathrooms, upscale entertainment centres and the recurring appearance of treats at your bedside, such as chocolates or a glass of wine. Common amenities include a vast, tenaciously organized DVD library, a small spa area and an outdoor soaking pool, as well as an amazing collection of photos, paintings, sculptural works and designer furniture.

Perhaps the most fulfilling part of staying at Waianuhea (which means “fragrant mountain mist”) comes at breakfast, lovingly prepared with fresh, local ingredients (often from the garden) and served at your leisure.
