Wolf Creek Golf Resort is one of the most underrated golf bargains in Canada. The course is a meaty, old-school Rod Whitman masterpiece of knee-high fescue and cavernous bunkers where a persistent Prairie wind forces players to think their way from tee to green. Built on the sand dunes of central Alberta, Wolf Creek Golf Resort enjoys excellent drainage, which helps to ensure the course is always in terrific condition. Range privileges on the resort’s world-class practice facilities are included in the green fee. Small wonder Travel + Leisure Golf magazine ranked it as Canada’s third best golf resort.
Whitman’s newest nine holes, which have been combined with the south nine to form a new self-contained 18, open in June. There’s also a new short course. If you’re really broke, you can even camp on site for as little as $20 a night.
Peak season: $85 or $102.50 with a shared cart; $65 after 4 p.m.; $55 after 6; Juniors and seniors play for $60; same-day replay for $60.
Get four players together and stay at the four-star Wolf Creek lodges for three nights and play three rounds of golf, with range privileges and shared carts included, for just $390 per person. At peak-season green fees, that’s like paying $30 for each night’s accommodation.
Hankering for an authentic Alberta experience without the Calgary Stampede price tag? Ponoka plays host to the next best thing, the Ponoka Stampede is complete with authentic chuckwagon races, steer wrestling, tie-down roping and more from June 25 – July 1.
