Barbados Flavour...

While visiting our friends in Barbados last April, we got to try the best place on the island for a roti.   Roots is a restaurant in an authentic chattel house that serves the best rotis and other island favorites.  Whether you get the curried chicken or beef roti...you have to try the local dish of the island!   Also, you'll have a good time reading the ceiling of this restaurant as it is filled with messages and signatures from travellers visiting the island.  You may want to leave you mark too!

I'm a "Bajan" local living in Canada who tries to "go home" once a year. For the best local food on a slim budget, here's what I recommend:

I always ask for a fridge in my hotel room and access to a microwave, and I shop for prepared local food at the various supermarkets with a local Deli... portions are huge, and usually the bulging styrofoam containers serve me two delicious meals.

I pick up several different meals at a time - fish, chicken, barbecue, stew, etc. - and put them in the fridge, then reheat portions as I need them.

If you are not from the Caribbean and you open your palate to new experiences, Barbados has a full range of fairly benign food to keep you amused - and well fed - for your entire stay!!!

Occasionally I also book my own flights separately and a furnished condo for a week. It works out a bit cheaper - and sometimes I just prefer to have all the facilities of home.

Thanks for the tips, bimjim! You've got the best of both worlds, eating local while keeping your travel budget from skyrocketing.
