If you haven’t been to Winnipeg lately you will be in for a treat. A great deal has been changing in Winnipeg as of late. Several new towers have modified the skyline but most importantly the addition of the Forks complex has created an amazing energy in the city’s core. Here at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers is where you will find a variety of diversions to amuse yourself. People have been meeting at the Forks for a long time; according to archaeologists it may have been as long as 6000 years ago.
There is something for everyone here. The kids can spend endless hours at the Manitoba Children's Museum or skateboarding at the Plaza. The weekend I was there we found a Fish Festival going on with a mascot and games for the youngsters. Adults will find numerous boutiques full of unique wares. This is a venue for many artisans to display their talents whether it be crafts, jewellery, art or music. You will find buskers at several marked corners ready to entertain you with their music or artistic skills.
Strolling along the river is a favourite pastime on a warm summer’s day. You can also feed the ducks or board the Croisiers for an afternoon on the river. The new Esplanade Riel footbridge crosses over to the French Quarter, St. Boniface where you will find good cuisine. The Promenade Bistro serves is simple in style but serves first class meals. At the Salisbury House restaurant situated in the middle of the bridge you can watch the boats pass by while you enjoy some Winnipeg specialties - a Salisbury steak, a nip or some red velvet cake.
The Forks Market includes many types of specialty foods to tempt young and old. You can pick up all the fixings for your dinner including, fresh bread, meat, fruits and vegetables and even a special bottle of wine and desserts, fudge or candy for your sweet tooth. If you plan to spend a good portion of the day here you can find several options at the food kiosks or try out the fine dining.
The Scotiabank concert stage hosts many popular entertainers here. The Forks is the focal point of most Winnipeg celebrations including Canada Day and New Year’s Eve. You can make a day of it or stay even longer. For out of town visitors there is the Inn at the Forks or other fine hotels nearby. The Forks is a good central spot to start your vacation in Winnipeg.
